There is simply no way to run the Big Coast without boating thousands upon thousands of nautical miles.
There are few short hauls or lake-sized bass fishing jaunts in this saltwater world.
We’re talking boating and fishing Alaska waters, BC Inside Passage, Great Bear Rainforest and 360 degrees of Vancouver Island. The Pacific Northwest in all its glory!
Boating is epic and calls for serious captain skills, reading weather and a myriad of maritime challenges, twists and turns.
For committed saltwater anglers, all five species of Pacific Salmon run these waters Southbound returning to their natal streams to spawn. Miighty Chinook or Tyee (Over 30lbs) Salmon are the true kings here. A fish to be revered and worthy of stewardship and all conservation efforts.
Along the way, these salmon run a gauntlet of commercial fisherman, recreational anglers and First Nations food and ceremonial fisheries. And this is merely human pressure. Apex predators from Grizzly Bears to Killer Whales to Sea Lions and pesky harbour seals all take a bite out of once-bountiful Salmon returns. Add in big cetaceans like Humpback Whales and winged warriors like the Bald Eagle…and you also have wildlife viewing which rivals Africa’s famed Serengeti.
Angling on the Big Coast is far from limited to Salmon, with prized bottom fish like Halibut and Ling Cod aplenty, Albacore Tuna running North up Pacific Northwest Coast and an increasing number of pelagic species moving North with warming waters remain a newfound addition.
Big Coast has always been about boating adventure and skilled saltwater travel to unearth unparalleled adventure. Fishing has always been a way of life in these waters, so plying angling efforts calls for the utmost in responsible and sustainable fishing.
It’s a special place that calls for respect and admiration of First Nations stewardship and ways.
