BIG COAST

The very words conjure up something special. Something expansive.

Life on the edge is never easy. Never risk free. But the enlightened truly understand that this dance on the frontier, living where most fear to tread, is where the essence of existence can be found.

From Alaska to Washington State, the British Columbia Inside Passage, Great Bear Rainforest, Vancouver Island and often daunting Outer Coast combine to create a maritime fabric like nothing else. Framed by rocky shorelines and towering coastal conifers, this rainforest world and saltwater existence remain like little else on Planet Earth.

In many ways it’s a brand new exploration and experience. When the first Spanish and English ships reached the BC coast mere hundreds of years ago, they did so without aid of electronics, charts or sophisticated navigation tools. Many found a disastrous salty ending, uncovering the true meaning of Graveyard of the Pacific. For the Indigenous peoples that have called this coast their traditional territory for more than 10,000 years, history runs deep in DNA, paired with an incredible ancestral sense of stewardship and responsibility.

For nearly two decades, Big Coast has explored this West Coast world one adventure at a time. With more than 200 handcrafted television episodes locked away in the vault, this exploration in cinematic production and storytelling has reached millions upon millions of enlightened viewers in British Columbia, across Canada, US and around the World.

World class boating, saltwater angling, culture, wildlife and otherworldly seascapes have lived at the heart of Big Coast television and those involved since the inaugural run back in 2005. It’s been an incredible journey and our team can only give massive thanks and appreciation to all those who’ve jumped on board and buckled up for the ride.

Life at it’s finest is a living, breathing journey and Big Coast embraces stewardship, sustainability and a responsible coastal dance that pays heed to longstanding Indigenous cultures, incredible ecosystems and amazing flora and fauna.

From the mighty Orcas and Humpback Whales to Coastal Grizzly Bears and the elusive Kermode, humans seem almost insignificant in the shadow of mighty coastal apex predators. For the fisherman, these predators are the truly efficient and proven hunters, feeding on five species of migrating Pacific Salmon and a smorgasbord of coastal appetizers.

With the greatest respect and a nod to the traditional territory of Coastal First Nations, we humbly acknowledge your place of being and historical link to this amazing coastal frontier.

Whether cruising at 30 knots with ease, trolling rocky shorelines with expertise or merely soaking in the environment and world-class showcase of wildlife, Big Coast still thrives on an immersive West Coast experience on the planet’s edge.

It’s funny sometimes how time flies in an often timeless world…but Big Coast is more committed than ever to bringing incredible coastal experiences, adventure and culture to audiences from North America to New Zealand and Australia, Eastern Europe to Japan and China.

It’s been an amazing world-class run, and for that we remain truly grateful.

This…is Big Coast!

For more than 30 years, Tim Milne has set his course for adventure through his storytelling and incredible love and respect for the planet on which we tread.

From early and youthful days of paddling, fishing and boating to journalism and high-performance coaching education, Milne’s path was set early on. Even if he had no idea at the time.

Writing, photography, film and television production became a main passion and has remained so since the mid-nineties for the now well-accomplished outdoor adventurist. From early days of snowboard and downhill mountain bike production, Milne moved from film to digital, HD to 4K and many creative steps along the way.

The Sacred Ride backcountry snowboarding series, World Cup Snowboard and Mountain Bike projects aired on CTV, CBC, Sportsnet, Outdoor Life Network, Fox TV and Extreme UK and brought adventure and frontier life to televisions around the globe. Milne raced downhill mountain bike at professional level and coached the Canadian Snowboard Team for four years, including earning Canada Gold and Silver Medals at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Big Coast TV series first debuted in 2005 and is gearing up for Season 17 of production. Meanwhile Milne continues to write for magazines, digital and any medium of the day…that matters.

Life is such a journey and true storytellers should hold a special place in the lexicon of life. The nonstop dance of adventure. The little things and epic moments.

Milne continues to produce film and television and put pen to paper. As he always has. The stories all change and so does the medium. But the song remains the same.

Longtime outdoor aficionado and boat captain, Milne continues to tell stories. Just like his Father and ancestors did before him.

“I learned most of what I know from my old man. He was a writer and avid angler and hunter. And great drinking buddy” Milne says. “He taught me how to take only what I needed. And a deep respect for Indigenous culture and history. For that I’m forever grateful.”

With such a long and satiating run in proverbial back pocket, Milne can reflect on 200 episodes of Big Coast TV Series and a nearly 30-year run plying adventure in Big Mountains and Mother Ocean.

“I’ve borrowed a line from Quentin Tarantino many times,” Milne says with a wry smile. “I don’t write and produce for an audience. I just do it for myself and hope there’s enough cool people out there willing to share in the experience.”
