Sometimes I’m not sure what to say about Duncanby Lodge.
Owner Sid Keay will tell you it’s the Happiest Place on Earth. With tie-dyed staff and relaxed vibe Duncanby may be the finest fishing outpost in British Columbia. Located at the mouth of Rivers Inlet, a couple hours North of Port Hardy and a couple hours South of Bella Bella, Duncanby is prime time Rivers Inlet!
From prime bottom fishing in Fitz Hugh Sound to some of the most incredible Chinook and Coho trolling anytime…anywhere, Duncanby has an incredible slice of the finest big fish access on BC’s Coast.
I’ve been incredibly fortunate over the years to have worked, fished and celebrated with a group of friends like none other. From owners Sid, Leigh and Mike Keay to Kyle, Logie, Teena and the whole crew…it’s a special lot. Add in Duncanby Lodge being situated in Wuikinuxv Traditional Territory, home to Hereditary Chief Ted Walkus and his brother Dwayne, and Rivers Inlet has a cast of characters deserving an adventure comic book.
Anyway, I had a few trips to Duncanby this season. The first was early June for the Rick Hansen Percy Walkus Hatchery Fundraiser. Fishing was stellar, company extraordinary and fundraiser incredible as always. It was some of the steadiest Chinook fishing we’d seen early season with some line peelers into Tyee range.
In July I rallied my boat from Denny Island down to Duncanby and fished three days with Kyle Morton and Dave Logan, Duncanby managers, longtime guides and general beauties. We actually went halibut fishing, a true rarity in our Chinook-focussed hoser world. We even got into some nice Halis and had a blast. We also managed to chase down a few Chinooks…which was awesome. This was the meat and potatoes of Episode 4 Duncanby to Duncanby del Sur!.In more ways than one, Logie was the star of the Rivers Inlet turn!
The Duncanby del Sur (Duncanby Down South) portion of the TV episode, encompassed a trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica and fishing the brand new Duncanby del Sur Grady based in Marina Flamingo. Now I’ve been making Baja trips for decades but had never ventured further South. Costa Rica was cooking hot, absolutely West Coast beautiful full of beauty West Coast people. For a first impression, it was awesome.
We had some fantastic days fishing with Andy and Kyle and enjoying the general hospitality of the Keay Family. We had some amazing days on water and some beauty sunset cruising. Caught a pile of Dorados and a sweet Wahoo. Despite the awesome days trolling and general offshore good times, the trip’s highlight was gathering lawn chairs and hitting the beach with the Keay Crew for a Costa Rica sunset!
